At a time when we are increasingly coming back to Vintage products, from furniture to ceramics, cafes that are over 100 years old are becoming increasingly popular. The smell of coffee in the Italian style rising in the morning more and more often guests in Polish homes, and attachment to the interior design and furnishings makes cafes not only a useful but also a decorative element of kitchen equipment.

Maybe let's start from the beginning, what is a coffee maker? Where was it created? How it works?

We will try to answer these questions with a person who is not familiar with the topic of coffee makers, although many people have heard about this device, the vast majority do not yet know how it works and how the coffee from a coffee shop differs from ordinary brewed coffee.

Cafeteria, coffee maker, originally a moka, a pressure pot for brewing coffee comes from Italy, where in 1918, the owner of the aluminum machinery and equipment factory Alfonso Bialetti wanted to create a device that would allow the preparation of coffee in a similar way to large coffee machines for coffee then used in Italian cafes. Research and numerous attempts to create such devices have resulted - in 1933, when the first home coffee maker was created. However, production had to wait because war broke out. After the war, Alfonso Bialetti's son patented and advertised the coffee machine as an ideal device for brewing coffee at home, which quickly gained immense popularity and became a widely used device in Italian homes.

Coffee maker construction

The coffee machine, or coffee maker, is a device that consists of three basic parts. The lower tank is used for pouring water, the funnel with the strainer - for pouring coarsely ground coffee, and the upper tank is a place where ready coffee is collected. Between these two tanks is a seal. However, as the coffee maker is used, it can be replaced. For a coffee brewer to function well, it is worth doing it regularly - once a year or every two years. This frequency depends on the number of coffees brewed every day.

For people starting their adventure with the world of coffee makers, we should think about the four most important things:

1. What type of hob will the coffee maker be used? What material should you choose?

2. What size coffee maker should you choose?

3. Which brand should you choose?

4. Shape? Colour?

We will try to answer the above questions.

What material should you choose?

Due to the material and environment in which the coffee will be used, there are 3 types of coffee makers:

Aluminum - the most popular coffee makers, in classic angular shapes, are slightly lighter than those of stainless steel express the tradition in preparing coffee. There are many high quality Italian coffee makers on the market, such as Pedrini, GAT, Giannini, Pezzetti, Tognana, Bialetti. Coffee makers of this type are not adapted for use on the increasingly popular induction hobs, but there are so-called hybrid cafes in which the upper tank (for coffee) was built of aluminum and the base (for water) was built of stainless steel, e.g. Bialetti Moka Induction, Tognana Sphera, Forever Miss Prestige Induction, thanks to which coffee sizes larger than 3 Cups work on induction and the traditional taste of coffee is combined with modernity.

Stainless steel - usually in a streamlined shape, resistant to intensive use (more durable than aluminum), do not corrode, are less susceptible to deformation and discoloration, high availability of models for induction, but the price is usually slightly higher than in aluminum ones. Their design is modern, most often they come in the colors of polished steel, but sometimes you can find models of different colors, the Pezzetti company offers its Steelexpress cafes available in many colors.

Electric coffee makers - They belong to the most expensive coffee makers. Coffee makers of this type usually have a system thanks to which after brewing coffee the device turns itself off as it is in electric kettles. However, some models are equipped with a programmer that allows you to brew coffee at a programmed time. On the market you can find cafes with a power from 200 W to 500 W, more power, will shorten the time of making coffee. Many Italian companies offer such electric coffee makers, examples of such coffee makers are: Forever Miss Prestige Electro, a large range of G.A.T. electric coffee makers, Bialetti Moka Timer.

What size coffee maker should you choose?

Another important element when choosing is size. From 1 Cups to 18 Cups. 1 cup = 50 ml of black infusion. So when buying, you need to consider how many people will want to drink coffee, and what type of coffee you prefer, 1 cups is enough for espresso, a 3-4 cups coffee will be useful for americano coffee, and if you are a fan of coffee with milk, then coffee maker 4 -6 cups should be sufficient.

ATTENTION!

Don’t buy a coffee maker larger size than you need. If you choose the coffee maker for 9 Cups, you will not prepare only 1 cup in it. The lower tank should be filled with a certain amount of water so that the safety valve can fulfil its function. And it is best to fill the strainer whole with ground beans so that the prepared coffee has the right aroma.

To solve this problem, manufacturers have met and created regulators that allow you to brew smaller and larger cups of coffee.
